Book Launch, Shakespeare & Co, NYC, Jan 28, 2020, 7 PM

“Dying is very relaxing,” we learn in Notes Going Underground. This and other musings on life and death at the launch of Joram’s latest short story collection.

“This intriguingly dark collection of short stories by Piatigorsky (Jellyfish Have Eyes, 2015, etc.) considers the possibility of a transitional stage between life and death. …” — Kirkus Reviews

Reading & Art Exploration

Enjoy a reading from Joram’s new book, and a small display of his extensive Inuit art collection – which served as the inspiration for many of the whimsical, artistic, and inviting stories that will greet you in The Open Door, and other Tales of Love & Yearning (Adelaide Books).

Inuit art refers to artwork produced by Inuit people, that is, people of the Arctic. The Inuit, through their artistic works, which include carvings and sculptures, express their culture and the natural beauty of the Arctic. Inuit Art carvings often depict the animals of the Arctic or figures that represent Inuit folklore, mythology and religion, which took the form of nature worship. Read more on Joram’s Inuit Beautiful blog.

Introduction and Q&A by author Sandra Beasley.

The event is free and open to the public, with an optional dinner reception, which is $40.

Joram will read from his memoir, The Speed of Dark. Reception to follow.

The Speed of Dark (Adelaide Books) reveals how the author – his mother the baroness Jacqueline de Rothschild, and his father the world-renowned cellist Gregor Piatigorsky – broke the chain of his lineage of art, music and banking to establish an important career in science. As he strayed from the well-trodden scientific path to examine the eyes of jellyfish and other little-studied species, Joram learned that science, like music, has many poetic aspects. In this contemplative memoir, we learn that science and art are two sides to one coin. Keeping our mind open to such paradoxes and possibilities, we are invited to ponder seemingly absurd questions that may someday have answers, such as: “what about the speed of dark?”
